The electric formula race car designed for the inaugural season of Formula E, the Spark-Renault SRT_01E aimed to push the boundaries of what was achievable in electric motorsport, whilst ensuring a balance between cost-effectiveness and sustainability to encourage competitive motorsport. The new championship was to build on the FIA's traditional role as a leading promoter of innovation, technology and performance in the automotive sector.

The result of a 10-month collaboration, the SRT_01E was designed and built by Spark Racing Technology, headed by the renowned Frédéric Vasseur, together with a consortium of leading manufacturers in motorsport. The car's monocoque chassis was constructed by Italian firm Dallara from carbon fibre and aluminium, and possessed aerodynamics sculpted to aid overtaking. McLaren Electronics Systems provided the electric motor, gearbox and electronics and Williams Advanced Engineering was responsible for the design and supply of the batteries and their management systems. Overseeing all the systems integration, performance optimisation and powertrain electrical safety was Formula E's Technical Partner Renault, whilst custom made 18-inch treaded tyres were created by Official Tyre Partner Michelin.

The SRT_01E was used as the base chassis by all 10 teams and 20 drivers competing in the zero-emission series for the inaugural season; after this, teams were allowed to develop their own technologies on the chassis, encouraging manufacturers to build their own car to help accelerate R&D around the electric vehicle. The battery developed a maximum power of 200 kW, allowing a FIA limited top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h) and acceleration from 0–62 mph (0-100 km/h) in less than 3 seconds. The battery pack was big enough to provide power for 20–25 minutes but, as races were almost an hour long, the drivers had to swap one car for another halfway through the race. Just one durable tyre was on offer, developed to cater for both wet and dry conditions and helping to reduce overall costs and promote sustainability. The car was used until the end of Formula E's fourth season in 2018, after which it was replaced by the SRT05e.

This model of the Spark-Renault SRT_01E is based on the Season 4 (2017-18) Show Car, in its final season of use. The 2017-18 season consisted of 12 ePrix, starting in Hong Kong on 2 December 2017 and ending on 15 July 2018 in New York City. Frenchman Jean-Éric Vergne took victory in the Drivers' Championship with 198 points, besting Brazilian Lucas di Grassi and British racer Sam Bird. Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler took victory in the Team's Championship. Audi had started the last race weekend 33 points behind the Techeetah-Renault leaders, before an incredible haul of 76 points in the final two races in New York saw them claim the title by a narrow two-point margin.
